Blueberry Bottom is a 5 acre field on an organic family farm in Southeast Iowa that produces 8 varieties of highbush blueberries, and day neutral strawberries.
Farmer Kim grew up coming to the family farm of her grandparents, Howard and Geneva Zihlman. She learned to garden, preserve and cook from her Gram. Kim (otherwise known as...the blueberry lady) researched blueberries for many years before jumping in and planting 5 acres in 2017.
Part of the farm has been in the Zihlman family since 1894. The family legacy is important as this generation puts its mark on the land. Farmer Steve had always wanted to farm and his opportunity came when the family decided to transition the farm to organic back in 2014. One of our farm goals is to grow more food than feed, and that has driven us to grow food grade oats, plant a fruit and nut orchard, plant perennial blueberry bushes and day neutral strawberries.
After having cancer twice, Kim became motivated to eliminate chemicals in her environment. One part of that was eating more organic food, which was the catalyst for transitioning the farm to organic.
Blueberry Bottom Farm has been Certified Organic since 2014. The USDA organic label guarantees our practices meet organic standards as the farm is inspected annually. In addition, Blueberry Bottom is Real Organic Project certified, which carries even stricter guidelines regarding fair labor and plants grown in the soil.
Organic is more work, but worth it!
